Of course! however you might want to make sure and wait for someone else here to confirm my answer as I am unsure of myself. Better yet, why don't you ask the iPage guys because they can answer your iPage question better...
Ok, I installed Family Products, or I think I did. I copied the files to the correct folder on my server, but I have no php or sql experience so I really don't know what I'm doing. There don't seem to be any changes in the interface. Is there something else I'm supposed to do?.
The instructions say to copy the files to thier respective folders (I copied them to the "catalog" folder on my server which is where all the other files are, but as far as what folders inside that folder, I don't know).
Run the family_products.sql on your database. (Again, is just opening the web interface considered "running" it?)..
You have to put the php files in the subdirectories under catalog and admin directories as indicated in the zip file..
Running a sql file means, finding the mysql admin interface; your host should have given you cpanel where you typically find phpmyadmin or specifically given you a link to this tool..
Use this to open the database where your osCommerce is installed in..
(this info is stored in configure.php file in the catalog/include directory).
Then click on the SQL tab and paste teh code from the famuly_products.sql file in the box and hit go..
It will create the necessary tables to hold the product families..
If this is installed fine; you then have under the Admin interface a new option listed under Configuration called Family products where you define product families. eg A, B and C are of the same family; if you show product A, it will list B and C as related products...
I have downloaded all 5 zip files and can't find where it tells what file to put in what folder. I'm totally new at .php and feeling pretty stupid..
This is what the read me file says:.
Family Products - Installation.
Copy the files to their respective folders.</i> <br>.
Which file goes in which folder?<.
Run the family_products.sql on your database.</i><br>.
I don't have this option.
For non standard installations, all changes are clearly marked within the files..
How it Works.
Products are added to a family by typing a family name into the text area in the products edit page in admin - a new family name is added to the database if it doesn't already exist..
Products with the same family name will be displayed on the product info page in the same manner as product listing in the main catalog - regardless of their category..
The display of the listing is editable in admin in the same manner as product listing - a Products Family link will appear under the Configuration box in admin..
Any help? Please let me know if I need to be asking somewhere else, for complete idiots maybe?..
This contribution installation is a bit confusing with the different zips and an intermingled combined file..
Usually there is a complete Zip file available to install a contribution..
For the family products you need to use 2 zip files..
1) family_products_update2.zip dd 16Aug03: contains all files with readme and directory tree indicating where to put the files in your catalog directory..
2) family_products_module_update.zip dd 27Jan04 (bugfix): containing 1 file that you use to overwrite the includes/modules/family_products.php file that's part of 1).
Installation for php files is by overwriting the existing files..
Installation of sql file; via phpmyadmin into your mysql database..
Check with your host on how to get access to your database. Most hosts provide CPANEL with a link to a phpmyadmin web application, your host might provide you also with a direct link or other instructions..
It is important that you get the sql run in the database before modifying the php files, otherwise your store might be broken...
I think my server administrator has to run the mysql file for me. I've asked him to do that, then I'll tackle the php files..
Thanks for your help...
It worked!! (picture snoopy doing his happy dance...). Thanks so much for all your help. BTW I couldn't find the information as to what file to put in what folder in any of the zip files, except by choosing "properties" on each individual file. Might help someone else, or they might see where it is right away..
Now, I'll post another question......
I have a quilting iPage website where we sell patterns, templates, notions.....
There are quite a few products that accompany other products (ex - this book goes with this ruler...). How can I put that kind of information on one page?.
For example, I have one book that uses 2 different rulers. I'd like to "suggest" these additional rulers as purchases on the same page, and be able to order them from the same page. Does this make sense?..
Product Families contribution will show an additional box below the product description with other products from the same family. Pretty easy, flexible way to show related products..
There is also a specific related product contribution, but I haven't installed that myself..
