My first question is Here goes: Just purchased domain through iPage, e-mail accounts and web hosting.? Thanks in advance for any answer or 2. Another quick question... Before I start I just want to say that I have, I think, read most of the information I can find on EP, including many strings on here. I have EP set up and working on my site,.

However is there a way that I can use EP along with either Works DB or Access. This is because I have a complete list of all of my products in an access file. If there is can anyone tell me the stages to go through in order to do this..

For example I have the fields.

Author.

Title Description.

Price.

ISBN.

Etc.

Thanks if you can help.

Hmm... I need to find out myself. I don't know what is the answer to that question. I'll do some poking around and get back to you if I discover an decent answer. You should email the people at iPage as they probably can answer it..

Can you not export an Access database to an Excel file? Once it's in a spreadsheet, it's just a matter of putting the right headings on the right columns. Download a sample EP file to see what they should be..

If you have fields in your database that aren't standard EP, you'll have to edit your database and your EP file to accept them. There's a package in the contributions that explains how to add fields to EP...

Is there a way of using access without EP?..

Export your DB as a comma or tab delimited file without headers. Then upload it to a directory on the server. If your adding headers to a table add them with PHPmyAdmin..

Now the fun part. go to the shell prompt on the server (SSH) and vi the file and type:.

:set fileformat=unix <enter> then.

:wq.

This is if you create things in windows and work on a Linux/Unix server.

If your file is exact to your table then skip this set but if you want to add specific info to specific columns do this in the shell prompt.

1. to get Author, Title, Description from fileName.TAB.

Shell> cut -f 1,2,3 fileName.TAB > description // ">" saves a new file as the name that follows it.

Now your ready to insert info into database: log into MySQL:.

Mysql>load data local infile '/path/to/file/description' into table Table_Name (Author, Title, Description);.

And boom your populated in no time. This is what I used to populate my DB with over 350,000 items. It took no time at all!!.

Good luck.

The only poblem is that I am a complete retard and dont have a clue what your talking about..

Im sorry..

Then lets start from the beginning.

Are you on your own server with SSH capabilities?.

Can you do a "save as" in excell and then use the file type dropdown and choose comma delimited?.

Can you do an export Database in Access and follow the wizard until you get a comma delimited file produced?..

Yes to all of the above,.

One of the major problems I am having is making the database able to cope with what I want.

Ie.

It just has fields for model, product name product price, where as I want more, how can I create these.

Thanks for the help by the way..

You just want to add a few new columns to MySQL database table?.

If so select the table go to structure in PHPmyADMIN and at the bottom you will see "Add New Field 1 at end of TABLE <GO>.

Then do your thing!Iff you don't have PHPmyAdmin then do it through command promt (SSH) in mysql I will have to look up the code for that... not hard!.

So far what I understand is you have a access database and excel file that you want to import into oscommerce mysql database? right?.

Trying to get on the same page!.

Yes thats right,.

As you may have guessed I dont have phpmyadmin but I'm guessing I could get hold of it from somewhere, is this a handy program to have? I know some basic php stuff.

Just a note, I assume that by excel file you mean that I have exported to that from access.

PhpMyAdmin is very useful for dealing with your database, but you can probably use whatever you've been using to add or remove columns from your table. It's open source, you can download it from the web...

Oh damn .....

It needs to be installed on the server. so a search on PHPmyAdmin and find it and install it. Its free!.

In the mean time you need to read up on the MySQL documentation.

All your answers are here..

In the mean time go to SSH and log into mySQL once in and in your database type:.

ALTER TABLE `Table_name` ADD `author` VARCHAR( 100 ) NOT NULL ,.

ADD `price` INT( 11 ) ,.

ADD `description` VARCHAR( 100 );.

ALTER TABLE `counter` ADD INDEX ( `author` );.

A little bit about above. 'author' is the name of the column you want to add. VARCHAR is the type of field in the column (100) is the length of the field, anything after 100 will not be allowed to be written. NOT NULL means it is required.

INT is for short numbers like product ids and quantities. Read up about them in the mysql documentation. they are simular to access..

Manupulate this to fit your settings! If you need the code to get into MySQl via SSH its:.

Mysql user=username password=password host=localhost.

Database=name_of_database.

/\ all on one line in the shell> prompt.

You will then see mysql> and this is where you enter the above code!..

Well you can export as a delimited file from access and skip excel all together. but it can be viewed in excel to make sure it is formatted correctly!.

But this is for data loading not table creation!..

Hold the phone I have just discovered that I do actually have phpmyadmin installed on the server..

Kool that makes life a ton easier!!!.

Pm me or reply if you need more help.
