OsCommerce takes more than 10 seconds to respond to Authorize.net during checkout on many occasions, which causes Authorize.net to mark it as a time out. I am still looking for how to fix this.....
Turn off the option to give customer receipt from authorize.net since your system already provides a receipt email on it's own...
When you guys run into the timed-out problem, is that specific transaction listed in under the "Unsettled Transactions" log of your Authorize.net account?.

About 1 out of 20 transactions lately I get the following email from authorize.net:.
What causes that?.
Server isn't heavily loaded down or anything....
0.05 load average....
Quad (4) 1.8ghz xeon processors.
15krpm ultra 160 drives.
Running osCommerce 2.2-MS2 on redhat7.3.
Anyone have any ideas?..
It's auth*.net problem not yours.... happens to me alot aswell... not to worry..
