Quick question: How do I choose a iPage hosting service for my website? Looking forward for any comment. Another question I got... I need help big time. I can't change the text that people see on the main page on my oscommerce. I have gone into the following where the file is :.

Includes/languages/english/index.php.

But when I try to edit I get the following message :.

Error: I can not write to this file. Please set the right user permissions on: /home/prostarw/public_html/shop/includes/languages/english/index.php.

How do I solve this ? .

Also how do I change the pic at the top left of the screen to something I want instead of the oscommerce image ? I am really new to this...

Good question... I dunno what is the answer. I'll do some research in Google and get back to you if I got an useful answer. You should email the people at iPage as they probably can answer it..

Thanks,.

I have right found the index.php file using cuteFTP but when I right click the file and go down to CHMOD it says the read and write persmissions boxes are ticked ok and the manual box has 644. Is this ok ?

Yes, this sounds correct. Are you logged in as the owner of the file, you can also see who owns the files. You must be the owner in order to modify the file that is set with the permissions you mentioned (644) if you are not the owner you can change the persmissions to 777 and then you should be able to change the file..

After you modify the file change it back to 644..

Monte..

That works fine but now if I edit the wording and save when I view the main page I get the following:.

Parse error: parse error, unexpected T_STRING in..

If you weren't a gooner I'd help you.......

Oh go on then.......

Psot a bit more of the code of what you've done to includes/languages/english/index.php and let's have a look..

Well the trouble is even if I edit but don't change anything and save it still gives the same message. Here is the original from install :.

This has been plaguing me for 3 weeks. I took one letter out of the text "This is the default setting.....

And I screwed up my front main page, I then tryed to re-apply the default text, and it remains screwed. The only other thing I did was change permissions.. but not sure how that could effect the iPage site going to hell..

Blah..

I said screw it, I removed the instalation. I aprantely don't know enough to begin to mess with this program...

Did you use the admin panel file manager to upload the file? Don't - it corrupts PHP files..

Your problem in particular is this line:.

Define('HEADING_TITLE', 'Let's See What We Have Here');.

It should read:.

Define('HEADING_TITLE', 'Let\'s See What We Have Here');.

Or rather, that's just the first error caused by a corrupting upload. The rest of the section should read:.

If ( ($category_depth == 'products') || (isset($HTTP_GET_VARS['manufacturers_id'])) ) {.

Define('HEADING_TITLE', 'Let\'s See What We Have Here');.

Define('TABLE_HEADING_IMAGE', '');.

Define('TABLE_HEADING_MODEL', 'Model');.

Define('TABLE_HEADING_PRODUCTS', 'Product Name');.

Define('TABLE_HEADING_MANUFACTURER', 'Manufacturer');.

Define('TABLE_HEADING_QUANTITY', 'Quantity');.

Define('TABLE_HEADING_PRICE', 'Price');.

Define('TABLE_HEADING_WEIGHT', 'Weight');.

Define('TABLE_HEADING_BUY_NOW', 'Buy Now');.

Define('TEXT_NO_PRODUCTS', 'There are no products to list in this category.');.

Define('TEXT_NO_PRODUCTS2', 'There is no product available from this manufacturer.');.

Define('TEXT_NUMBER_OF_PRODUCTS', 'Number of Products: ');.

Define('TEXT_SHOW', '<b>Show:</b>');.

Define('TEXT_BUY', 'Buy 1 \'');.

Define('TEXT_NOW', '\' now');.

Define('TEXT_ALL_CATEGORIES', 'All Categories');.

Define('TEXT_ALL_MANUFACTURERS', 'All Manufacturers');.

} elseif ($category_depth == 'top') {.

Define('HEADING_TITLE', 'What\'s New Here?');.

} elseif ($category_depth == 'nested') {.

Define('HEADING_TITLE', 'Categories');.

Get yourself a real FTP client and pretend that the admin file manager doesn't exist...

AAhh, that explains my problem as well. I did change the text via the admin panel, but what I have been doing, probably should have done it here is using notebook to edit files, then saving them as PHP then replacing the file I re-wrote..

The thing is I know nothing about PHP, only HTML, which is what I'd like to have on my front page..

Somebody said use the echo command, but when you're talking to a PHP illiterate that means nothing..

I'll re-install the instalation and see if I can change it without using the admin panel, thanks for the ray of hope steve...

If you look at the define, you'll see there is HTML in there. Basically, that entire string is written out as HTML at the appropriate place. So code the HTML you want and put it between apostrophes for the string. If your text includes any apostrophes, preface each with a backslash (for example, \').

You really should learn at least a bit about PHP - it will make your life with osC ever so much easier. I like Programming PHP from O'Reilly Press...

As to not mess up the cool other stuff that is on the front page like the box with products in it, and the login stuff...

Also I am taking classes for web development, however we just finished the first quater which was basic college stuff, we actually don't get to the good classes till the third quater...

I've actually had the iPage site operational all but the front page, which with all that default stuff, scares folks off. If I could only get over that milestone, I think I could manage to have the iPage site up..

I've got one setup using PHP-NUKE and I thought it was great, I learned how to add my own icons and replace the default ones and such. So I am learning, this was just one thing, that I find tricky..

I think the hole osCommerce project would actually be nOOb friendly if it had an easy way to change the front text..

If you can help I would apreciate it more then I can express...

OMG I figured it out!!!!!!.

Write it in HTML, then call it PHP..

Only problem is all the good stuff is moved down..

Hi Don,.

I'm not sure your figured it out. If you are still having problems with the text on your home page, I just visited and it looks like you may still be having problems, try this:.

For the code that reads:.

Define('TEXT_MAIN', 'This is a default setup.......');.

You are actually defining the the variable "TEXT_MAIN" which at this point it looks as though you have deleted all of the definition, thus you have "TEXT_MAIN" showing up on your home page. You can enter text/HTML code in between the apostrophes i.e. define('TEXT_MAIN', 'YOUR HOME PAGE CODE HERE'); and this new home page code will show up on your home page. You also need to make a similar entry for "HEADING_TITLE" and "TABLE_HEADING_NEW_PRODUCTS"..

HTH,.

Monte..

Yes, I see what you're saying, I don't want it to say TEXT MAIN,.

But what I did.. of course it's not right, was simply write what is at top of my webpage in html, save it, then upload it to the english folder, then rename it index.php but it really is all html in there..

I've tryed, changing text on line 13 of the default code, something as simple as removing 1 letter out of the the word "This".. as in This is the default setup.....

When I change anything in there it gives me a string error on that line. And makes the hole front page un-usable..

I don't suppose that copy and pasting the default into Windows Notepad is the proper way to change PHP code, which maybe where I'm getting some of my issues with that effort...

Hi Don,.

What are you using for your text editor? The error your describing is sometimes caused by extra white space in your file, which may occur when you save your document, you could try opening the file and resaving without a change and then reuploading and see if your file is corrupt. Also I would try using a freeware named EditPlus, I use this all the time and it works great you can find it on www.tucows.com..

Monte..

If I understand you right I should in theory be able to change this (underlined stuff).

To my html correct?.

Okay Monty that program has helped!.

I am now so far.. have everything up to line 51 working.

Line 51: define('TEXT_NOW', 'now');.

Says.

Parse error: parse error, unexpected T_CONSTANT_ENCAPSED_STRING in /home/hnodsd01/public_html/cdkeys/includes/languages/english/index.php on line 51.

Know whats wrong with that line?..

Yes, just back up your file, and then upload your modified file..

Monte..

Ignore that last post, thanks, Monte.

The line 51 looks okay, the error is more or less about invisible characters, I would start with a fresh version of the file and try again using the EditPlus..

Monte..

Hey Hey!.

Thank you guys so much, I actually copied and pasted the text from Steve's post on page two, to the EditPad you recommended, and low and behold.. OMG 3 weeks and many hours later and lots of help. I now have a homepage!.

Thanks so much!.

I am sure more issues will arise, and I'm glad you guys are here willing to help. The little extra income I receive from my iPage website is very nice for a poor college student!.

Thanks again!..

So could anyone write me an new index page with the small bit of text that I wanted and then I can upload using smartFTP rather than the admin panel ? I have put what I wanted in the first page of this topic...

Shaun.

Look at Don's earlier post where he underlines all the text that he can replace - that is the text that you also can replace safely with your html..

Just read the earlier posts about apostrophes, use a decent editor - backup your file before you do anything and you'll be fine. You'll have to get used to playing around in the code yourself to do stuff in osC and this is a good place to start..

If if causes a problem post back what you've done, if it works congrats, you're on the way..

This is what I got but it's still messing up, saying parse error on line 14. All I want is the normal basic main page with the words "Welcome to Prostar World"..

Define('TEXT_MAIN', 'Welcome to Prostar World);.

I think you're missing a ' after Prostar World and before the ).

Define('HEADING_TITLE', 'Let\s See What We Have Here');.

You're missing a ' in Let\s after the \.

Try that..

Nope still not working, this is driving me mad. All I want is just one line of text on the main page then I can carry on with setting up the rest of it..

This is what I'm getting with DzSoft PHP Editor:.

This post has been edited by.

GoonerShaun.

Line 33 has an error.

Should read.

Define('TEXT_NOW', '\' now');.

I can't see anything else wrong but then again I'm not a coder.

Try that..

Gooner note Steve's post on page 2, copy and pasting the PHP is really the problem, your lines at the bottom are messed up like mine were...

Im still stuck, manged to finally change the colours of the shop (probably very easy for everyone else) I just need this main page done. Can anyone do it for me ?

Hello,.

On line 33 you have an extra apostrophe..

Define('TEXT NOW' , '' now');.

It should read:.

Define('TEXT NOW' , 'now');.

Make sure you have your text between two apostrophes..

Define('TEXT NOW' , 'your text goes here');.

You have the same problem with the line above it..

Monte..

I finallly done, it was staring me in the face.

I wasn't reading all the help everyone was giving me properly, yeah I was reading but it wasn't sinking in. Thanks guys..

I would strongly urge anyone who is setting up an osCommerce store to:.

1) Learn the fundamentals of PHP - string syntax most particularly..

2) Not use the file manager in admin for ANYTHING. Use the FTP capabilities of your web design tool (for example, Dreamweaver) or a separate tool such as SmartFTP.

3) Keep a complete copy of the store files on your local system, make changes there and upload as needed..

4) Optional but recommended - use an editor that understands PHP syntax and color-codes it - helping you avoid problems such as have been discussed here. I use Dreamweaver for this...

Agree with all of that and would add one more.

Get hold of a decent file comparison tool - helps you to see the differences between files and merge changes..

I use BeyondCompare2 from scooter software and can't imagine trying to hack around with osC without it. It'll work across FTP sites as well as File Systems so I can use it to check changes, merge codes and upload the files from my DEV environment to my PROD environment..

If you're going to start working with contributions it's worth every penny and it's not many pennies anyway.

No affiliation just a satisfied customer..

Hello,.

You will have to set the permissions for the index.php file you are trying to change. All files have "read" , "write" and "execute" permissions assigned the them. You do not have "write" permissions for the file you are trying to modify..

You can modify permissions from some FTP applications by selecting the file and then running commands on the file to set the permission. I would look for "chmod" short for Change Mode or a way to set the permission which are based on a binary number system and appear as either 777, 766, 744 or rwx rwx rwx..

You want 766 or rwx rw rw.

Then you will be able to overwrite the file you want to change..

A quick and easy way to change the OSC logo is to create your own image of your logo and name it the same name as the OSC logo and then overwrite the existing OSC image file on your server..
