I'm stumped. I'm not so sure what is the right answer. I'll do some investigation and get back to you if I bump into an useful answer. You should email the people at iPage as they probably know..
Most likely, what the folks at fasthosts are saying is that they don't offer support for osCommerce but that their server and database is compatible and shouldn't present any obstacles. It's very hard for a server not to meet the minimum requirements to run osCommerce..
I looked at.
I love the art! I didn't see a link to your store and it isn't at /catelog or /store. Please post some details as to what you did and what directory you installed into, if you got that far. Post a link if you can..
The basic procedure is to:.
1. download the software. Make sure it is osCommerce v2.2rc2a.
2. unzip the download and read the documentation.
3. create a database to be used during the installation. Note the name of the database server, the name of the database, the name of the database user, and the password..
4. create a directory to install into on your server. Most people use /store or /catalog.
5. copy the files from the download into that directory.
6. Use your browser to go to.
Or whatever directory you used.
7. The install program will start automatically. It will ask for those pieces of info I listed in step 3.
8. If all goes well, your store will be installed!.
9. read the docs for post-install cleanup. There is a lot to be done after the store is installed so be patient. It's a learning experience..
If that procedure doesn't work, post a response detailing what you did and where things went sideways.
When you unzip the download, it creates a directory named oscommerce-2.2rc2a. Inside that directory is a directory called catelog. Inside that directory are the files (and directories) you want to upload..
Also, if your host created the database for you, you will need to get the info from step 3 from them. You should be able to create a database yourself by going to your control panel and running MySQL Server.

Unfortunately you couldn't have picked many worse hosts for running osCommerce on. Whatever you do - don't buy their shared ssl, because it won't work with osCommerce. Most hosts provide shared ssl for free..
You aren't even allowed to buy a full ssl certificate with Fasthosts - they're not interested in that sort of work - too much effort..
I went to fasthosts.com to see what they include. Wow! I don't think I know enough bad words to properly describe them. Cut your losses and get a new host. I'm reasonably happy with.
Anything has to be better than fasthosts...
A VERY, VERY BIG THANK YOU.
Your replys have kept me going, I no longer feel alone..
I'ts nearly midnight here, had to catch up on jobs i'd been neglecting, but just wanted to try ... got the data base installed ... just didn't know to put put it in the address bar ... Duh?? .. was trying to do it with the ftp ... bigger Duh!! ....
Got this message from osCommerce.
Warning Warning: I am able to write to the configuration file: /home/fhlinux140/j/judetoo.com/user/htdocs/catalog/includes/configure.php. This is a potential security risk - please set the right user permissions on this file..
Maybe it's something to do with my uploading of osCommerce or is it something fasthosts have done but don't know??? anyway have to crash now..
Your comments about fasthosts are well noted .. thanks .. I have a lot to sort out..
Anyway nighty night for now..
Thank you so much.
That is exactly what you should get after doing the installation! Kudos. Go through the documentation and it will give you post-install directions on removing the install directory, changing permissions, etc. Make one change to those though. It tells you to set the permissions on a couple of directories to 777. Don't. Set them to 755 instead.
Here are some.
That you will want to install right away. One other tip... make backups as you go!.
Grats again on getting it installed!.

Oooo dear, need my hand held again, don't know if i've done something wrong in the install procedure but can't find/get to the place where I set everything. Thought maybe it was because I deleted the install folder because there was a warning to do that. so put it back but still am lost..
Sorry to be a pain..
With fingers crossed.
I'm not an oscommerce expert, but what I can see is tat you need to delete or rename your /install/ directory asap. I'm in your installation process right now.
Also change the writting permissions on the configure.php files..
After that calm down, and you will do it step by step..
Hi multimixer, thanks..
Are you able to do all the permission things in my installation? because I can't find where that place is so please if you can tell me as if I am the most stupid child how to navigate to that place..
I get into judetoo fine arts shop and can't find where the configure tools are. I'm sitting there like a dummy.
I've deleted my install folder. where do I go to access and change the writting permissions on the configure.php files.?.
I'm probably missing something that is in my face. arrrgh!!..
I have exactly the same problem - I've changed the permission for the configure.php-file to 644 (and also tried 444), but I still get the error-log..
Setting permissions with fasthosts is a bit of a pain. With most other hosing co's you can do it through ftp, but with fasthosts you have to use SSH..
This article might be helpful:.
Lesley, don't worry, you will get your face back soon.
I guess you don't know where the right place is to change this permissions. There are no configure tools to change the file permissions in osc. You need to do it using another program, this one that you use to upload your files to the server (ftp).
In dreamweaver (what I use) I just do rightclick on the file name. It took me 4 days to figure this out..
Do you know where this 2 configure.php files are located?..
Hi everyone, it's really comforting to know I'm not alone..
Php_guy, Multimixer, uMfazi, Tinee, Vger, thanks all of you for taking the time to give your help you are keeping me going..
Php_guy thank you for saying you liked my art you did me good, feel as if there is at least something I actually can do..
Thanks multimixer found where to change the permissions so gone in there and probably done some daft things but now my catalog page comes up with my custom error page so something changed. I'm plodding on now trying to find how I make the database content. I use dreamweaver so will try the right click. no I don't know where this 2 configure.php files are located?.
Quite honestly I would like to delete and reinstall the database because think I might have changed something I shouldn't. got a bit finger happy. kind of want a clean exercise book to try again. Has anyone done this?.
Need to think about hosts as fasthosts don't seem to thought much of, one thing they are good at is there is always someone at the end of the phone and they are very helpful with the things they do do. and I'm fearful of confusing myself even more. but it's no good if they can't do it..
Lesley, don't try to solve all issues at once..
The 2 files are located catalog/includes/configure.php and catalog/admin/includes/configure.php..
You don't need to do anything to the database itself, thats the osc job. You just use the admin panel, database configurations are happening "by them selves", so better don't mix at all..
You can reinstall the complete osc package and hats maybe a good idea. After you do this, just don't mix up with too many things, just don't try to change everything. You can do it later anytime, and there are many contributions you can use.
I recommend you to read following articles:.
And later, after you did all this, you can read.
Have a nice day..
Well I wanted to do my iPage website myself, was advised not to ... employ an expert rang loud and clear .... Well it's up ... www.judetoo.com ... I have a payment gateway ready and waiting ... I have oscommerce uploaded ...
AND I have nearly given up.... sob sob sob .... arrrrghhhhh ... sobbing..
My sever ... www.fasthosts .co.uk ... says "we don't support oscommerce but the database we have given you does, ask them, they will quide you".
OsCommerce tells me to do things I can't because I can't get started, oscommerce tells me exactly what to do and I will willlingly do it thrice over if need be ... but I am in a twlight zone where nothing exists to click on..
(everything is easy when you know how ....... very loud sobbing ...... ).
Please, somebody, how do I join it all up?.
Still in hopeful optimisum.
Sorry but I don't understand what the problem is..
I looked at the url you posted and couldn't find a link to the oscommerce bit so I tried www.judetoo.com/catalog and the installation pages appeared. Is this what you are having a problem with?.
Please be more specific so we can help you...
