Quick question... How to set up iPage web hosting on mac os x server? Hoping for any answer. 2nd question I got is.. I want to upgrade my website, and I want to use frames again. But, I have a specific way I want it. I'm not too good with frames at all, so could you guys check this out and tell me if it would work, or give me some tips on how to make it happen? If you could give me the entire code that would be great!.

Here's a pic of what I want:.

See, I want to have the 2 frames on the sides (frames 2 and 3) as a navagation menu with links. When a link is clicked, the middle frame (#4) will change. But, I also want the entire page scrollable...

Good question... I dunno what is the answer to that question. I'll do some research in Google and get back to you if I bump into an anything. You should email the people at iPage as they probably can answer it..

Thanks for the links..

But, do you think it would work the way I want it?.

See, only the center frame would change pages, but that frame itself woudlnt be scrollable....the ENTIRE page which includes all 4 frames would be scrollable...

Then the only way is to make 5 frames. have all those or the bottom frames in 1 big frame so they can scroll. but I would use tables or div columns for the bottom so you only have 2 frames to deal with, the top and the bottom. doing the 5 frame thing will and would mess you up...

See, I need the entire page to scroll because the very top frame might be pretty big, and take up almost half of the page from top to bottom, therefore it needs to be scrolled away also. Also, why do you think it would screw me up?.

Anyone want a challenge and make the code for that for me?.

C'mon, you know you want to!..

Your're kidding? right? if you have 5 frames then it will be confusing with links and all, trust I have been there. so you want all the frames to scroll as one but still have 4 frames in the middle, so what about this. good luck with it...

Thanks, you were close..

This is what it looks like.

Each frame except the center one is scrollable. I don't want any of the frames scrollable, just the whole page...

Haaaa haaaa that was funny. the whole page did not scroll. each frame scrolled not the whole thing...

Yea, I've been messing around with it, but can't figure it out..

Anyone else wanna give it a try?.

I have such a great idea for my new site, but I just can't figure this out!..

I just gave you the code, why won't it work. to get the whole page to scroll as one you have to put it in a big frame like I did above. then teh frames will scroll. then you can turn the other frames off so they don't scroll. also you have to make so each page isn't that big so it needs to scroll. if you don't gt it later today I will play around with it again and see what I can do, again...

Ahhh, thanks! Yea, like I said, I'm not too good with this stuff, so it's confusing me..

If you could do that it would be great, thanks!..

I guess nobody else wants to give it a try?..

Well try this. this is the index.html page.

And this is.

It is close but I am not sure you are going to get what you want...

Have you ever thought of just using Tables & CSS? It would make the design look much nicer, and would be much easier to implement..

I have to agree with acsinclair. I fail to see the point of using frames if the whole page is going to scroll anyway. You can use a fairly simple table layout, or you can do what I'm doing at.

My page.

And use pure CSS. If you can use server side includes, then you're golden...

Won't it look kinda stupid though if you use five frames, and say you scroll down near the bottom of the page and click a link if only the middle changes??.

Have you considered use of tables rather then frames and instead of your frame 5 use an Iframe?? I would do it that way as it sound just about what you need..

I tried that scoutt but it didn't work, the whole page wasn't scrollable, thanks though for the help..

The reason I want it the way I do is because I want to be able to change the top and side frames often with updates about the site, but it will go down the side frames pretty far, so for everyone with different resolutions to see everything, it has to be scrollable. I know, it's hard to understand, but trust me on this one..

The thing is, I only know basic HTML, so Im sure theres other ways to do this, but I sure as heck don't know how to do it, and I think this would be easier for me to maintain since I know HTML...

I read a perfect phrase from a professional web designer somewhere that said "using HTML for page layout is a lot like using a roller to paint a portrait.".

CSS is the way to go and it isn't any harder to learn than HTML. In a few days you could learn plenty to get you going...

Like I said it migth not work. as long as the 2 sides are frames it will not allow the page to scroll. see, everything is contained in it own frame. your best betwould be to use css and divs and SSI (serverside includes) to make the to sides updateable easy..

Other than that I don't see any other choice...

Thanks guys..

Anyone know of any good sites where I could learn CSS?..

Just wondering, seems this guy needs the same thing I need, but someone said that CSS won't do that..

I refer you to my response to that thread...
