First of all I am planning to make personal website. How can I choose a reliable iPage hosting services? Thanks in advance for any response. Another question... Well I am creating yet another design for yet another client and I was wondering, How do I get my left & right columns fixed in size. My problem is that I was trying to do like some of those webstores you see which dont expand across the whole page but merely expand 80% out of 100%..

I got the store to look like that. But when someone clicks on a product the columns resize and it looks all out of wack. Is there anywhay to get them fixed so that they will only appear in 150 width?..

Hmm... I need to find out myself. I don't know what is the answer to that question. I'll do some poking around and get back to you if I bump into an decent answer. You should email the people at iPage as they probably could help you..

BUT! - I dont need the boxes sized, I really need the left and right columns fixed. because even though the boxes are fixed when I click on a part of the store, the left and right column expand in size and make the header graphic in the boxes seem out of wack...

Here's what I'm working on.....

You will notice if you click a link in the left list of vehicles, the left & right column header images shrink..

I need to them to stay still because shrinking ruins the look. So thus is why I need to get the right & left column.

To stay at a fixed size, as well as the center image..

I think this might help..

Create a transparent gif to the exact pixel size that you want. Insert this:.

<img src="/catalog/images/yourtransparentgif.gif">.

Right AFTER the first <td> tag in the infobox you want to set the width for. This will force the box table to stay the width of the image. I suggest making it whatever width you want and maybe 1px tall so that it won't ruin the layout of the box contents (like putting a taller image will make the space at the top of your infobox bigger)..

The reason they are expanding is because you have something, probably an image, that is larger than the set size. For example, if BOX_WIDTH is set to 150 and you have an image that is 200 pixels wide, the column size will increase to accomodate the larger image. When you switch to a different view with smaller images, the size goes back to the correct size. I suspect that if you look at your iPage site in 800x600, you will see that you are expaning to the point that your page no longer fits on the screen. The proper way to fix this is to not have any items in the left or right column that are wider than the size you have set in BOX_WIDTH..

INSTRUCTIONS.

1. Open catalog/includes/application_top.php.

2. Find the line (around line 47) that reads.

// customization for the design layout.

define('BOX_WIDTH', 145); // how wide the boxes should be in pixels (default: 125).

3. after this, add the following lines .....

// customization for the design layout left column.

define('BOX_WIDTH_LEFT', 165); // how wide the boxes should be in pixels (default: 125).

 .

// customization for the design layout right column.

define('BOX_WIDTH_RIGHT', 125); // how wide the boxes should be in pixels (default: 125).

4. (set your own width preferences (I have used 165 pixels for the left column and 125 pixels for the right) Save file.

5. Now open the second file to edit: catalog/index.php.

6. Find the first line to change at (around line 51) that reads.

<td width="<?php echo BOX_WIDTH; ?>" valign="top"><table border="0" width="<?php echo BOX_WIDTH; ?>" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="2">.

7. REPLACE this line, with the following line .....

<td width="<?php echo BOX_WIDTH_LEFT; ?>" valign="top"><table border="0" width="<?php echo BOX_WIDTH_LEFT; ?>" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="2">.

8. Find the second line to change at (around line 325) that reads.

<td width="<?php echo BOX_WIDTH; ?>" valign="top"><table border="0" width="<?php echo BOX_WIDTH; ?>" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="2">.

9.REPLACE this line with the following line.....

<td width="<?php echo BOX_WIDTH_RIGHT; ?>" valign="top"><table border="0" width="<?php echo BOX_WIDTH_RIGHT; ?>" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="2">.

10.Repeat steps 6 to 9 for the other files that you want to change the width in otherwise the changes will only be to the index page and pages loaded into the index page. This can be achieved by using a find and replace search function..

11.Save your file changes and upload to your server..
