Got a question... Stolen / hijacked domain name at iPage.com? Many thanks for any response. My 2nd question... So you want to get rid of the Date of Birth - Gender fields in the account creation portion of you page... Ha!! Good luck!!.

After the better part of four hours trying to fix the required fields in the account creation section, I think I have finally done it. I think one of the reasons it took so long, is that there are some posts about the topic, telling you to look in area's that for some of us do not exist..

Some of us dont have a "Customer Control" section where we can just click a button and the Gender/ DOB requirements go away. For those of us out there, still searching for the answer, the following, if not only half true, is quite the cavalier response from another poster, to those of us that are shall we say - A little less experienced than those of you..

Notice the use of the word simply. Oh isn't it so pretty.. The files you need to change are not so simply found. One of the application_top.php files that you need in order to alter the function of the GENDER - DATE of BIRTH required fileds, is actually found in admin/includes/application_top.php.

And the other can be found in in you root directory under includes/application_top.pfp..

Once you have located either file, open it up in notepad, or what ever editor you are using, do a search for the word GENDER and it will place you right next to the GENDER - DOB section of the code, where you can change both of their fields to "false". Save the file and upload it..

Do the same thing in both files and presto- changeo - the required fields are gone..

I hope this helps those of us who "Dont know so much" and serves as a note to the ones who "Do know so much", that if you are going to muster up half an attempt to help some one out, why bother trying to help at all...

Hmm... I need to find out myself. I don't know what is the answer. I'll do some poking around and get back to you if I find an useful answer. You should email the people at iPage as they probably could give you help..

That's the thing.. I really couldn't tell you.. My host has it on their site, I started to use it and try to configure it, and I ran into that little bump in the road. Once I started searching the archives, I found that I was not the only one who could never get an answer. Most people just said to to exactly what you just said, only not quite so nice.. Thanks..

As for the osC version ... In osC v.2.2ms2, in both application_top.php files, there is a line showing the version like this one:.

// define the project version.

Define('PROJECT_VERSION', 'osCommerce 2.2-MS2');.

Have a look in the files, I suppose even an older (or newer) version has something similar!..

The biggest problem is, we have a bunch of people that have never programmed before trying to program, and wondering why it's so difficult. To someone with any amount of web programming, the instuctions were 'simple'..

You can't expect to ask a web programming question and expect to get an answer in laymans terms...

I have to agree that it is difficult getting an 'easy' answer to some questions. And yes alot of us are not programmers, but we wish to learn how to do this stuff. I asked a question the other day and someone responded with "Then it's time to update the cart". Well easier said then done, because this particular cart is pre-milestone and there is no db compatibility. And if there is, I and a programming friend have not been able to figure out how to take this old db and put it into a new version of oscommerce. Trust me, if that were possible, I would have already done it.

Anyway, to Minetree, I was able through your post be able to figure out something that has had me baffled, so thank you!!!.

On another note and same topic:.

I would love to learn how to keep a field available, but make it 'not required'..

I went to the application_top file and wanted to make the 'state' field not required, but still would like it visible so that customers who have a state to input could use it, but those who don't have one can just leave it blank???.

Anyone know the answer to that??.

Thanks in advance,.

Which version of osC do you use? Because in the standard v.2.2ms2, there is a "Customer Details" section in the "Configuration" menu, where you can add or remove by clicking the Gender, Date of Birth, Company, Suburd and State fields, without making modifications to any file!..
