Good question... I dunno what is the answer to your question. I'll do some Googling and get back to you if I bump into an good answer. You should email the people at iPage as they probably know..

That's correct, the tax gets applied to the SHIPPING address, not the billing address. That's the way it's supposed to happen...

How do you mean supposed to happen? Our accountant said that tax is to be collected based on billing address...

I'd check with your accountant. I was in retail for years, and we'd have people come into the store all the time (in PA) and ship things to CA, and I was forever looking up the CA sales tax since it's different on every block out there..

The idea is, if the receiver went and bought it in a bricks and morter store, they'd pay their own state sales tax...

I would just clear this up. You are correct. After hearing back from you, I called my accountant (when I said our accountant earlier I was really referring to our client's accountant). Anyhow, my personal accountant told me that taxes are to be collected based on shipping address, and since my client does not have nexus in states other than GA, they only collect taxes for GA, and that the consumer is supposed to pay usage tax to their sate (there is some form that the consumer is supposed to fill to submit with their tax paymentI am sure that gets done alot!!). He even conferenced me in with the regional manager for some department deal with taxes (IRS maybe?). This guy confirmed what my accountant & you have said. Thanks for helping...

For some reason I found this hard too? Anyhow, please check out.

Previous Posting.

The only problem that I am still having is that taxes are calculated based on shipping address not billing address. So if a person lives in our state (GA) but mails to a different state, taxes are not calculated. I am trying to figure that out. If you find a solution, please post back..
