Windows vs Linux- iPage hosting plans?

First of all Windows vs Linux- iPage hosting plans? Thanks in advance for any answer. Second question of mine... I need to know how to change the page content on each page, especially the home page and where to go to input the Terms & Conditions and delivery details etc..

Also can I use boxes, colour etc and make bullet points in each product description, as currently it just adds it as one 'lump' of text..

Have tried to go into a file to change the normal text within HTML but not only is that not WYSIWYG style, but the pages seem 'locked'.

Please help, but be gentle, new user and not to clever with code etc, simple terms please..

Thank you..

Good question... I dunno what is the answer. I'll do some Googling and get back to you if I find an good answer. You should email the people at iPage as they probably can help you..

Thank you..

But does this mean I cannot make it look good with styles colour etc and layout without learning html..

Otherwise it will just be a 'block' of text won't it?.

Steve..

Read this:.

Wiki documentation.

It tells you how to do most of what you want to know..

Styles, layout etc can all be controlled via stylesheets..

And about the only html you need to know to avoid the "block" of text you mention, is the <br> (line break) tag..

Really...read the documentation at the link above...its very helpful...

Is there anybody out there that has managed or even tried to use a php include statement to import an html document as content?.

If this can be done (and I don't see why it shouldn't) this then solves the problem as you can design a page in a wysiwyg designer and save it as the file it includes..

I might start work on a 'Content Management System' for the 'catalog' and 'information' pages etc....

Anybody find it useful or is there one already?..

Hmm that's a good point....

I will try a quick hack and see what happens. I'm 98% sure this will work, because the defines eval just like anything else does, so an include statement should work too.....

Be back in a minute!..

Ok so, here were my results:.

Doing this:.

Define('TEXT_INFORMATION', include(DIR_WS_LANGUAGES'english/conditions.html'));.

Didn't work..

This, however, did work:.

$thecontentsof = file_get_contents(DIR_WS_LANGUAGES'english/conditions.html');.

Define('TEXT_INFORMATION', $thecontentsof);.

Enjoy!..

Yes...

Only if you make that statement inside catalog/conditions.php and replace.

<?php echo TEXT_INFORMATION ?>with that include statement..

If you want instead to use the OSC format, it's better to do that in the catalog/languages/english/conditions.php file, as I have posted above...

You guys are a little fast for me. Say I have an html page, mypage.html, that I want to appear as my home page, i.e. the middle section of sample store page. Do I put mypage.html in conditions.php somewhere? Where?..

Why use the conditions.php file? In the wiki doc it says:.

"Change the index.php introduction and welcome text..

This is in catalog/includes/languages/english/index.php.

You will need to change index.php in all of the language folders.

You can also change the heading title names in here..

Change the words "There are no products to list in this category." on the bar that comes up when you click a category..

This is in catalog/includes/languages/english/index.php".

Am I wrong in this?..

Conditions.php was just an example.

(And happened to be the one I was working with at the time lol).

You could do the same thing in english/index.php and english/account.php etc., etc....

Ok.

You want your main page of your iPage site to show up as the contents of yourpage.html.

Open the following file:.

Catalog/languages/english/index.php.

Fine the line that says.

Define('TEXT_MAIN', 'whats there already');.

Ok. You with me so far?.

Now, you have to options at this point:.

1. Open the source code of yourpage.html and paste it into the define statement above. Now, your define statement would look something like.

Define('TEXT_MAIN', '<html><body>blahblah</body</html');.

Only of course, there'd be lots more text than that..

2. Replace the line.

Define('TEXT_MAIN', 'whats there already');.

With the following two lines:.

$mystr = file_get_contents('yourpage.html');.

Define('TEXT_MAIN', $mystr);.

Got it?..

Hmmmm...interesting. Well, I tried to edit the main text and now it tells me I have a parse error and nothing shows up on the main page. I, on the hand, am not trying to make this my homeage....just edit the text..

So, here is what my code looks like:.

Define('TEXT_MAIN', 'Thank you for visiting our Gift Store! Shop online with confidence at Elysian Eden. We think you'll find us a great place for gift-givers to shop. The text should look like this:.

You missed out the ' at the end of your statement..

Thank you.

But now I can't get the \ to stay inserted when I use the word " you'll "..

NeoNiko.

My guess would be that you are using the online file manager to edit the files, you are better to use an ftp program such as ws_ftp to download the file and edit offline then upload..

The online file manager is known to cause issues when edit online, it can remove the backslashes from the code causing parse errors due to the code not being escaped with a backslash for apostrophes so let's in code should be let\'s but file manager can remove the backslash leaving you with let's which causes a parse error..

Thank you. I generally use Dreamweaver 4 for my websites. But I hear to use a PHP editor like PHPedit. Do you suggest a different one? I will try your suggestion and see what happens.

Thank you again...

From a post that I found and used - makes life simple to edit a html page with frontpage / dreamweaver then upload to the main page of osCommerce:.

"BACKUP FILES FIRST.

In /index.php find this line:.

CODE.

<td class="main"><?php echo TEXT_MAIN; ?></td>.

And replace it with:.

CODE.

<td class="main"><?php require('mainpage.htm'); ?></td>.

Then create an newpage (i call mine mainpage.htm) page with all the bells and whistles that you want to show on your mainpage and upload it to the same directory as your /index.php file..

The "require" statement will then call and place the index.html on your mainpage. This will allow you to frequently update the mainpage of your iPage website by just editing one file and uploading it.".

Not my contribution, but hope it helps..

There is actually a contribution that once installed about 10 minutes worth will allow you to use html pages for privacy, shipping, conditions etc..

Generally speaking you will find that you will have to change files in the includes/languages/english folder. (if your language is english if not use the applicable one) So if you want to change what is showing on the conditions page you will look for the includes/languages/english/conditions.php file.

You will see something that looks like this.

Define('NAVBAR_TITLE', 'What you want in the navigation bar');.

Define('HEADING_TITLE', ' What you want the header to say');.

Define('TEXT_INFORMATION', ' Your page info here ');.

Just remember that you need to insert the info between the ' ' or you will have problems. You can use HTML tags with no problem but if you use a ' in your text you must put a \ in front of it so the php script ignores it. So if you want to have the word what's in your text it must look like what\'s...
